The importance of development co-operation becomes very tangible in times of crisis like today. But in a world where more and more development actors engage in development, the fragmentation of efforts will reduce the overall development impact.
The pandemic has shown the need for better cross-donor collaboration. It has also shown the need for integrated approaches that address the multiplicity of negative impacts on the economic, social and environmental spheres. The SDG framework, with its universally agreed set of targets and indicators, offers a roadmap to ensure an inclusive and sustained recovery.
Building on seven case studies conducted by OECD in partnership with seven governments (Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Kenya, Myanmar, Peru, Samoa and Uganda) and their bilateral and multilateral development partners, the event will show practical ways to better use the SDGs to strategically plan a sustainable recovery, to co-ordinate and bring coherence to collective development efforts, and to ensure that results are delivered on the ground.
Following a presentation of findings, a high level panel of member country representatives and development co-operation providers will discuss their experiences in aligning to the SDGs at country level, with a double goal:
- Identifying the challenges and opportunities that country governments and leaders of bilateral and multilateral development co-operation agencies face in ensuring consistent support to sustainable development efforts at country level.
- Understanding what development leaders would gain from, and need to do, to make better use of the SDGs as a common framework for results.
This side event provides an opportunity for the international development community and the attendants to the 2021 UN High-Level Political Forum to discuss these important questions, and exchange views on the way forward to make the “Decade of Action” a tangible reality that delivers SDG results in each and every country.
