Local and Regional Governments Day: Bolstering multilevel governance, policy coordination, and innovative actions to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals from the ground up

Local Authorities Major Group

Local and regional governments are crucial to ensuring the 2030 Agenda becomes a reality. Throughout the multiple crises and challenges that the world is facing today, local and regional governments have been key in protecting people, planet and society through local public service provision and in fostering peace and solidarity through transformative city diplomacy.

The achievement of the universal development agendas will depend on the ability to bolster multilevel governance, policy coordination, empowerment of stakeholders and innovative actions to leave no one and no place behind.    The Local and Regional Governments Day will bring together the delegation of local and regional governments to discuss and agree on the constituency’s main messages to the 2022 High Level Political Forum, it will include a special segment on the review and implementation of SDG 5 on Gender Equality and the role of the feminist municipal movement in achieving the 2030 Agenda as well the launching of the sixth edition of the “Towards the Localization of the SDGs” which assesses and presents the role played by local and regional governments and local government associations in their efforts to achieve the SDGs, and their role in reporting processes such as Voluntary National Reviews.

The event will contribute to the HLPF showcasing how local experiences contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals in review at the 2022 HLPF.

Speakers include locally and regionally elected officials and principals from local and regional government networks representing all world regions, representatives of national government, and stakeholders.
