Transforming Learning for a Better Future: Education for Sustainable Development

Permanent Mission of Japan to the United Nations

Education for sustainable development (ESD) – as enshrined in Target 4.7 of SDG 4 – is an integral element of quality education. ESD reassesses what we learn, where we learn, and how we learn to ensure that we develop the knowledge, skills, values, and attitudes that enable us to make informed decisions and actions on aforementioned global challenges to human security.    Following up on the work of the United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (2005-2014) and the Global Action Programme (GAP) on ESD (2015-2019), the current global framework for ESD entitled “ESD for 2030” aims at mainstreaming ESD in education, skills training, and lifelong learning, and constitutes a crucial part of transforming education and learning to achieve not only the SDG 4 but the 2030 Agenda as a whole.    Held on the margins of the ECOSOC High-Level Political Forum (HLPF), this side-event will enable a constructive dialogue among a diverse range of policy makers and practitioners engaged in the field of both education and SDGs in general.
