Accelerating implementation of the 2030 Agenda – The contribution of Supreme Audit Institutions

International Organization of Supreme Audit Institutions (INTOSAI)

Supreme Audit Institutions as government external auditors are in a unique position to contribute to the follow-up and review of the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Progress on SDG implementation has been uneven across Goals and between countries. The COVID-19 pandemic has deepened these asymmetries, set back progress, and slowed down the implementation of the 2030 Agenda. While the 2030 Agenda provides the best available framework to address critical sustainable development challenges, its full implementation requires a collective effort to recover and learn from ongoing actions to reverse negative trends and accelerate SDG implementation.   The International Organization of Supreme Audit Institutions (INTOSAI) invites all stakeholders to learn from the inspiring work that Supreme Audit Institutions have been conducting on the 2030 Agenda and the SDGs. The side event will present specific examples of audit work - at national, regional, and global levels - that contributes to the in-depth review of three of the SDGs under review at the HLPF in 2022: SDG4, SDG14 and SDG15, as well as SDGs 16 and 17. These examples show how auditors can help assess the interlinkages, trade-offs, and synergies among the SDGs, and highlight specific findings and recommendations to accelerate progress. The side event will also present examples of how Supreme Audit Institutions can contribute to strengthening the SDG review processes through their independent analyses and contributions to the Voluntary National Reviews. These practical examples provide timely and valuable information that governments and other stakeholders can leverage to advance the full implementation of the 2030 Agenda going forward.
