As the world enters the third year of the COVID-19 crisis, it is clear that years of development progress, including on SDG 5, have been halted or reversed. Women and girls have been disproportionately affected by the socioeconomic fallout of the pandemic, struggling with increased burdens of unpaid care work, domestic violence, and disruptions in access to essential services among other challenges.
Part of the challenge is the paucity of data on gender equality and harmful practices. UNFPA has invested heavily in new innovative approaches to tracking and addressing SDG 5 - including new data products and partnerships that are helping more and more governments map where progress is stalled, and where women and girls are left behind. This important event will demonstrate the criticality of national data to building back better and ensuring women and girls are empowered to exercise their SRHR for achieving SDG5.
This important event will demonstrate the criticality of national data to build back better and ensure women and girls are empowered to exercise their SRHR for achieving SDG5 and the 2030 Agenda. It will bring together Member States, civil society, research and academia, the private sector and the UN System, and contribute to advancing the HLPF theme by:
- Highlighting the role of population data, and innovative data systems, including UNFPA’s new Population Data Portal, for SDG 5 monitoring and progress, tracking and targeting where women and girls are left behind on SDG targets 5.2, 5.3, 5.6;
- Featuring the array of data innovations that can track SDGs 5.2, 5.3 and 5.6 at country level, and related resource needs;
- Highlighting the return on investment from addressing GBV, harmful practices & and advancing SRHR.
