Building back better and promote sustainable development via Social and Solidarity Economy

Intercontinental Network for the Promotion of the Social Solidarity Economy (RIPESS)

Even before the COVID-19 pandemic, the report of the 2019 HLPF recognized that the world was not on track to achieve the SDGs, and that for some goals there was even a regression. The pandemic has caused unemployment to rise and poverty and hunger have increased for hundreds of millions of people. Global supply chains have shown their fragility. Bold and innovative action is therefore called for. There is a growing consensus that business as usual will not only prevent us from achieving the SDGs, but it might also cause even greater setbacks.

In its report for the 2022 ILC, the Office reports recalls The ILO’s global call to action for a human-centred recovery from the COVID-19 crisis that is inclusive, sustainable and resilient (2021) recognizes the role of the SSE for a broad-based, job-rich recovery with decent work opportunities for all. It is therefore timely to discuss the value added of the SSE and its role in advancing social justice through decent work and in promoting sustainable development.

Paragraph 24 of the UN Secretary General report of November 2020, entitled Socially just transition towards sustainable development the role of digital technologies on social development and well-being of all states:   "Another alternative model of growth, aimed at finding a new balance between economic efficiency and social and environmental resilience, is the social and solidarity economy."

The side-event will present recent advances for including SSE in implementing Agenda 2030.
