Building back better: Animal welfare, environment & sustainable development

World Federation for Animals

Dedicated action to protect animals and their welfare in the UN policy process has been insufficient to date, with devastating consequences for achieving the SDGs related to biodiversity loss, climate change, pollution and global public and environmental health.

Animal welfare has been shown to play a significant role in sustainable development for people and the planet and can contribute to the attainment of many, if not all, of the SDGs(1). Recent research indicates a strong, positive, mutually reinforcing correlation between achieving the SDGs and improving animal welfare.(2)

UN Environment Assembly-5 adopted UNEP/EA.5/Res.1, acknowledging that “animal welfare can contribute to addressing environmental challenges, promoting the One Health approach and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals” and invites UNEP to produce a report on the “nexus between animal welfare, the environment and sustainable development.”

This event will explore how animal welfare supports sustainable development, specifically how improving animal welfare can tackle and mitigate the impacts of the triple environmental crises (biodiversity loss, climate change and pollution) and prevent the emergence of future pandemics.

Speakers will elaborate on the essential role of a just One Health approach and how addressing the animal welfare nexus is essential to build back better and strengthen our collective ability to achieve the SDGs.

Speakers:

  • High Commissioner Damptey Asare, Ghana
  • Cleo Verkuijl, Stockholm Environment Institute
  • Stefano Prato, former chair of the Major Groups and Other Stakeholders Coordination Mechanism
  • Speaker from Quadripartite or One Health High Level Expert Panel (tbd)
