Building back better: Forest pathways for a green recovery advancing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development

International Tropical Timber Organization

Three forest pathways if pursued simultaneously can help the world recover from the COVID-19 pandemic and combat crises threatening Life on Land while generating sustainable economic benefits for a green recovery: (1) Halting deforestation and maintaining forests is imperative given their role in climate, biodiversity and water cycles; (2) Restoring degraded lands and expanding agroforestry is required to build up the “asset base” for recovery and nurture people and the planet; (3) Sustainably using forests and building green value chains is needed to build a more circular, carbon-neutral and inclusive future, leaving no one behind particularly in rural areas.  Forest pathways have the potential to provide decentralized solutions that are highly cost-effective, can be implemented comparatively rapidly and at scale.

To achieve SDGs ranging from Ending Poverty and Zero Hunger to Climate Action and Life on Land, agrifood systems transformation needs to have forest protection, restoration and sustainable use as integral component. Their adequate management is critical to avoid future pandemics and for achieving SDG 3 “Health”. Their sustainable use can provide impetus to SDGs addressing Responsible Consumption and Production and efforts towards more inclusive, sustainable Economic Growth.

The event will unite high-level representatives from international organisations, ministers, youth and the private sector to discuss how the scaling-up of locally adapted solutions, innovations and investments in young talents and ideas can be integrated in efforts to building back better from the COVID-19 pandemic and lead to a “whole of society mobilization” as envisaged by the Agenda for Sustainable Development.
