Building Back Better: Measuring and Enhancing Policy Coherence for Effectively Delivering on the SDGs by 2030

Government of Romania

In a global context where countries are still struggling to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic, geopolitical conflicts in Europe and elsewhere are threatening the safety and well-being of people around the world. The current refugee crisis, increasing energy prices and threats to global food security require governments and societies to adapt to unforeseen events and to take collective and coordinated action to overcome crises. Efforts to build back better call for mutually reinforcing actions at different levels of government as well as for strengthening the ways we measure progress based on outcomes and impacts.  The 2030 Agenda and its implementation across countries and levels of government provides a shared strategic framework for international cooperation to transition towards more sustainable and resilient societies and economies. SDGs measurement and policy coherence can bring together all relevant stakeholders around the same table to understand what actions are working and how to scale them to accelerate progress based on evidence.   Against this background, this side event will provide an opportunity for sharing practical experiences on how governments are mobilising various tools at national and local levels- such as strategic planning, budgeting, regulation, public procurement, monitoring and evaluation - and building capacities to break out of sectoral silos to accelerate progress on the SDGs.
