The pandemic has had a disproportionate impact on women and girls, delaying the achievement of SDG 5 by another generation - the global gender gap is not expected to close for another 136 years. But the pandemic has also exposed the central role of the care economy. All over the world, it is women’s unpaid and underpaid care work that has been filling existing gaps. COVID-19 recovery thus presents an opportunity for transformative, gender equitable policies that center on the importance of care.
The side event discusses the challenges posed, and opportunities afforded for gender equality by global COVID-19 recovery policies with:
- Introduction: Caroline Ausserer, W7 Project Coordinator
- Anita Bhatia, Deputy Executive Director UN Women
- Dr. Petra Follmar-Otto, Director-General for Gender Equality at the German Ministry for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth
- Divya Mathew, Director of the Women Deliver policy and advocacy program, W7 Advisor
- Memory Kachambwa, Executive Director African Women’s Development and Communication Network
- Emilia Reyes, Programme Director of Policies and Budgets for Equality and Sustainable Development at Equidad
- Moderator: Jessica Woodroffe, Director Gender and Development Network, W7 Advisor
