Vegetable oils have been instrumental in providing the much-needed resources for producing countries to support the acceleration of economic recovery post-Covid-19, including by increasing the welfare of small-scale farmers and the development of infrastructures.
At the same time, there has been increasing demand for vegetable oils to meet sustainability criteria, especially across the supply chain. Achieving that goal requires concerted and coordinated actions among relevant stakeholders, one of them being the development of various sustainability standards for major types of vegetable oils, such as Indonesia Sustainable Palm Oil (ISPO) and Malaysia Sustainable Palm Oil (MSPO).
Moreover, international organizations on key vegetable oil commodities, such as the Council of Producing Palm Oil Countries (CPOPC), have recently developed the Global Principles of Framework for Sustainable Palm Oil (GFP-SPO). This framework aims at creating common reference across different certification schemes applied to palm oil production, that are anchored in the UN SDGs with its three pillars (economic, social, and environmental) in a holistic and balanced manner. Furthermore, this framework can be used as the basis and reference for other types of vegetable oils.
This Side-Event seeks to:
- Highlight the pivotal role of the vegetable oil sector in supporting the achievement of targets of SDGs, including those related to SDG 5, SDG 15, and SDG 17.
- Promote public awareness of emerging trends and actions in ensuring sustainability across all types of vegetable oils
- Identify opportunities for next steps and joint effort implementation of promoting sustainable vegetable oils across both producer and consumer countries.
