Ministry of Planning of Iraq
The Marsh community is one of the oldest communities to settle in Mesopotamia thousands of years ago, and in this land surrounded by water from all sides, the population has lived here and has their own customs and traditions that differ from other human communities that have settled elsewhere in cities in southern Iraq. Women in the marsh community are a key pillar of participation and life-making, participating in some old industries and crafts, fishing and fish sales, and over the past few years have been clearly featured in the markets for the sale of dairy, particularly creme (al-Qaimer) and buffalo milk, which has a special flavor and taste.
The main objective of the activity is to highlight the impact of climate change, desertification, drought and water shortages on marsh women's (ahoary) practices, knowledge and traditional practices and their economic, social, cultural and health empowerment. Drought, water scarcity and climate change have changed the practices of marsh women and affected their economic and domestic work , health, cultural and social status.
