Indigenous Peoples Major Group for Sustainable Development (IPMG)
Register here for the side-event
The COVID19 has had severe impacts to Indigenous Peoples, who prior to the pandemic, are already marginalized due to the continuing non-recognition of their collective rights and the increasing plunder of their lands and resources resulting to their displacement and loss of livelihood among others. Responses to the pandemic likewise shows that the one size fits all approach in relation to economic stimulus packages of states is a disadvantage to many Indigenous Peoples who live in far flung areas and have to travel for hours to be able to claim their benefits. Recovery plans of states have not also included the specific needs and priorities of Indigenous Peoples and most were tailored in a business as usual approach that encourages more extraction of forest resources rather than putting emphasis on people and the environment.
This side event will feature reports prepared by the IPRI and IPMG on building back better from COVID19 while advancing the implementation of the SDGs.
