International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in collaboration with the Joint FAO/IAEA Centre of Nuclear Techniques in Food and Agriculture
How various nuclear techniques can be applied to improve the management of land and water resources.
Structured as a panel discussion and using an interview style format, the side event will enable representatives of countries from Africa, Asia and the Pacific, and Latin America, to report on concrete and tangible results achieved through the application of nuclear science and technology, in particular isotopic techniques, in addressing desertification, preventing the loss of productive farmland, enhancing soil fertility and productivity, and ensuring water security.
Examples will include the use of nuclear techniques to turn degraded land into healthy land (results in some cases maximised by the use of modern communication technologies), the role of isotopes in determining water and nutrient-use efficiency in climate-smart agriculture with a view to enhancing soil fertility and productivity, the development of drought-resistant crops, the identification of suitable aquifers to ensure the availability of drinking water, the identification of areas critical for ecosystem protection and restoration, and support to reforestation and the reduction of water pollution.
