Permanent Mission of Bangladesh to the United Nations |
COVID-19 pandemic is primarily a public health concern. The necessary measures enacted to contain the spread of the virus, especially the restrictions placed on the movement of people and goods, had a significant impact on all levels of the agricultural market chain. But while the pandemic poses some serious challenges for the food system in the short term, it is also an opportunity to accelerate transformations in the food and agriculture sector to build its resilience in the face of a range of challenges, including climate change. Agriculture supply chain actors in countries across the world have been able to reorganize themselves swiftly across the public-private spectrum forging unprecedented partnerships with e-Commerce companies to ensure the continued availability of food. This underscores the importance of harnessing digital technologies which create the scope for novel social enterprises and business models to emerge in the face of crises. The side-event aims to identify how different countries and organizations has responded to the crisis and how digital transformation of the agri-food sector can take an inclusive, efficient and sustainable approach. The primary focus of this side event is on ensuring food security and citizens’ access to food by bringing governments, development partners, UN entities, the private sector, and academia together to share insights and exchange knowledge, expertise and tools to identify the appropriate measures and programs to develop integrated, digital agriculture supply chain management systems and associated business models. |
