Muslims for Progressive Values
At a time when discriminatory gender laws and cultural practices are being exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, it is more important than ever to accelerate the push for gender equality on the global scale. Though much has been done to promote gender equality, an influential group has often been left out of the discussion. With nearly 84% of the global population identifying with a spiritual or religious belief group, we must capitalize on the important place that religious leaders and institutions have in the promotion human rights, including gender equality, to their constituencies. These crucial actors are the missing link in our promotion of human rights and gender equality within our global society and a link that must be utilized to address the persistent inequality half of the world’s population continues to face. Join us for a side event, Dispelling Misconceptions and Myths: Faith Actors Advancing Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women and Girls, featuring faith-based actors as they discuss the vital role that faith actors and faith-based institutions can have in accelerating global gender equality.
The side event will include presentations, a moderated panel discussion, and a question and answer session. The panelists, a diverse group of governmental, UN, and nonprofit faith actors, will discuss misconceptions about the negative role that faith has in the fight for global gender equality and examples of positive roles that faith based organizations and individuals have in fortifying efforts to achieve gender equality.
