Ending Gender-Based Violence: Policies to increase Protections for LGBTIQ people and advance SDG 5

OutRight Action International

Around the globe, LGBTI populations experience stigma, discrimination, violence, and other human rights violations based on sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, and sex characteristics (SOGIESC) and face high barriers in accessing development opportunities and services. LGBTI populations who face multiple and intersecting forms of discrimination due to their gender, age, race, ethnicity, ability, class, caste, socioeconomic status, migration status, and other factors that drive exclusion are even more marginalized.

At the core of gender-based violence are outdated but deeply ingrained patriarchal expectations of gender roles and appearances, and perceptions of how things “should be”. Anyone who somehow does not fit, or challenges these perceived norms or traditions, can become a target and victim of gender-based violence.

This event aims to highlight the different realities on combatting gender-based violence in different regions of the world with a focus on LGBTIQ populations. Gender-based violence and harmful practices happen due to root causes that affect women in all of their diversity and LGBTIQ populations, such as heteronormative patriarchy, and those need to be discussed.

This event will share challenges and good practices and highlight how to tackle gender-based violence toward LGBTIQ populations.
