Food System Transformations as 2030 Agenda Accelerators. Joint UN Food Systems Summit follow-up event contributing to the HLPF

UN Food Systems Coordination Hub

Food systems have become a part of the problem, while being a key part of the solution, to achieve the 2030 Agenda and the SDGs. Hunger and malnutrition have increased, poverty reduction has plateaued, inequality has risen – all are trends linked to serious challenges to agri-food systems. Our food systems have also become the leading contributor to global environmental degradation. The UN Secretary-General, convened in September 2021 a UN Food Systems Summit (FSS) as a part of the Decade of Action for delivery on the SDGs by 2030. One of the key outcomes of the summit was a set of commitments from Member States through statements and national pathways. These commitments for food systems transformation offer a basis for realizing the vision of the 2030 Agenda at country level. Based on the above background, the main objective of this side event is to showcase Member States’ frameworks and plans and how they are/will be using the implementation of the Food Systems Transformation Pathways as SDGs accelerators. With a dynamic panel the Member States will also present their needs to implement the pathways; how they are using national political momentum to invest in food system transformation; and what the barriers and opportunities are.

The side event will highlight overall the need for food systems transformation to achieve the 2030 Agenda with specific links to the SDGs under in-depth review in the 2022 HLPF.
