Impact of conflict and crisis on education and gender: Lessons from Afghanistan and Ethiopia

Onelife Initiative for Human Development

Afghanistan and Ethiopia have made significant progress on SDGs 4 and 5 over the last couple of decades.

These countries' hard-earned gains are now at serious risk due to waves of crisis - from COVID to conflict. Afghanistan is now the only country in the world to prohibit girls’ education, doubling the number of girls out of school at the secondary level and has cost Afghan girls more than 200 million days of learning to date. An estimated 3 million boys and girls across Afar, Amhara and Tigray regions in Ethiopia have been deprived of their right to education since November 2020 due to the war. COVID and conflict have created a perfect storm for a rise in gender-based violence and harmful practices, like child marriage.

While much has been said on Afghanistan, and quite little on Ethiopia in comparison, the voices of those in the country are often lost in the global discourse.

Malala Fund’s Education Champions from Afghanistan and Ethiopia will share their analysis on the implications of these various forms of crises on gender and education and their recommendations on how to safeguard and drive progress towards SDGs 4 and 5.

Speaker profiles:   Malala Fund Education Champions from Afghanistan and Ethiopia. Ziauddin Yousafzai, co-founder of Malala Fund.

Format:   A panel discussion facilitated by a high-profile moderator (TBC).

The side event will be interactive, with opportunities for participants to ask questions of the panelists and contribute to a crowdsourcing of recommendations for safeguarding progress on education and gender in these contexts.
