Impact of COVID-19 on women and girls’ mental health

The Co-organizers envisage a panel discussion with representatives from South Africa (2), Netherlands (2)  This high-level event, taking place on the sidelines of the 2022 High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) on Sustainable Development, will focus on the impact of covid-19 on women and girls’ mental health, and the “unintended consequences” COVID-19 policy decisions that failed to carry out adequate equality and diversity. This resulted in overlooking the concerns of minorities and marginalized groups, women, and children.  In direct response to the HLPF theme “building back better from COVID-19”, the discussions will tackle SDG 5, putting particular focus on the direct links between the impact of COVID-19 on women and girls’ mental health.  

The exchanges will highlight the the psychological aftermath of the pandemic, especially for the economically and socially excluded or marginalized.  

Key Objectives:  

  • To highlight the impact of COVID-19 on women and girls’ mental health.  
  • To explore opportunities for States to build a ‘new social contract’ with various social partners, based on human rights and equal opportunities for all.  
  • Look at the most promising strategies, and actions today for overcoming gender inequality and discrimination, and how the empowerment of women and girls accelerate SDG 5 progress and recovery from COVID-19
