Implementing and interconnecting environmental and human rights due diligence processes

Stichting Global Reporting Initiative (GRI)

The most significant impact that organizations can have on the SDGs happen in the value chain as a result of its activities and business relationships. Supply chains are more complex than ever before. In effect, most of the SDGs are either directly or indirectly linked to a company’s supply chain.

Implementing due diligence processes is a complex undertaking, while national governments have begun taking steps to codify due diligence obligations into policy and national legislations are continuously being proposed and adopted. However, many have been limited in scope or approach, by adopting a siloed perspective towards sustainable development.

Advancing the implementation of the SDGs requires an integrated and holistic approach that interconnects environmental and human rights due diligence processes. However, more clarity is needed on how can policies enable an integrated approach to due diligence as well as on what it in practice for companies.

The proposed event aims to demonstrate that implementing environmental and human rights due diligence in silos is not enough to assess risks and impacts on people and the planet, while recognizing the need and the benefits of adopting an integrated approach and the role that it can play in building back better form the pandemic, within the decade of action. The session will highlight the challenges that come with interconnecting due diligence processes by presenting case studies. The event aims to build on the lessons learned and inspire stakeholders around the world.
