Baha'i International Community
In light of this year’s ECOSOC Youth Forum and the theme for the upcoming High-Level Political Forum, “Building back better from COVID-19 while advancing the full implementation of the 2030 Agenda,” the Bahá’í International Community and the Major Group for Children and Youth launched a series of four intergenerational events to appreciate how far we have come in increasing the participation of young people in decision-making processes, explore existing gaps, and create a space to deliberate about the future of youth participation in the Decade of Action.
The fourth installment of this series will take place as a side event during the HLPF focusing on how we can build meaningful cooperation between generations. We need long lasting strategies to ensure that intergenerational collaboration becomes more common and more explicitly valued and sought. This concluding event of the series will bring together both youth and members of older generations to discuss factors that enable multilateral spaces to benefit from the engagement of young people.
The need to engage young people is widely acknowledged at the United Nations, yet significant barriers remain. At times, youth are seen as a panacea; however, actors within the UN system have yet to identify what type of support young individuals require to contribute effectively in international spaces. If systems of policy, programming, and governance are to benefit from the full contributions of each new generation, fundamental changes will have to take place to make way for enabling environments needed to face current and future challenges.
