LGBTI Stakeholder Group
To achieve inclusive and equitable education for all, people of diverse real or perceived sexual orientation, gender, or sex charicteristics (SOGIESC) cannot be left behind. To ensure the school experiences of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Intersex (LGBTI) people are successful, not only academically but also socially it is pivotal to address the structural inequalities that LGBTI people face in school. LGBTI people face disproportionate amounts of violence and bullying compared to their non-LGBTI peers. This results in lower attendance rates, higher drop-out rates and lower educational outcomes for LGBTI students at all levels of education. Besides the negative impacts faced by many LGBTI student, schools are also the places where LGBTI young people meet and organise in informal and more formal structures. LGBTI youth are a driving force for change and in these cases work with their schools to make it a safer and better environment for all.
This event will highlight the barriers to achieving SDG 4 faced by students of diverse SOGIESC, and our panellists will share opportunities for improvements and best practices from around the world. In a time where laws are being introduced to prohibit talking about LGBTI people in schools, and the ongoing covid-19 has severely impacted the progress made in achieving SDG 4, coming together to ensure LGBTI people are included has never been more important to ensure no one is left behind.
