Indigenous Peoples have own education system established as culture, way of life full with knowledge, skills and innovations. Indigenous education has life skills that have been contributing to the sustainable development of the Indigenous communities. That’s why, the UNDRIP has recognized the Self-Determined Development of the Indigenous Peoples. The Indigenous customary institutions and practices are the Open Indigenous Universities of Indigenous education where all community members including women, youth and children learn from their elders and knowledge holders. However, co-options and or super-impositions of the state are eroding the Indigenous education and their customary practices by displacing to the Indigenous Peoples from Indigenous land and territories and endorsing detrimental and discriminatory laws and policies. There is need of development of the Indigenous curriculums and integrate them into the curriculums of the mainstream educations at all levels. In the meantime, it is important to transfer the Indigenous education to the youths and children for which the women can play very crucial and effective role. The present priority for reviving, revitalizing and promotion of Indigenous education for the Self-Determined Development of the Indigenous Peoples and their communities, the women, youths and children need to be brought at front so that they can interact with and learn from their elder educators. Decade on Indigenous Language successful, it is necessary to recognize the Indigenous education systems in Indigenous languages so that Indigenous youths and children including other youths and children also can study together about Indigenous Peoples and their knowledge, cultures, innovations and skills. |
