Justice for Survivors of Gender-based Violence in Complex Situations: Delivering on the 2030 Agenda for Women and Girls

International Development Law Organization (IDLO)

IDLO and GWI, in partnership with UN Women and the Government of the Philippines propose a virtual side-event on Justice for Survivors of Gender-based Violence in Complex Situations. As UN Member States review SDG5 on gender equality and its interlinkages with other SDGs, it is imperative for “building back better” to discuss actions to intensify national efforts and international cooperation to eliminate all forms of Violence against Women and Girls (VAWG).  Eliminating VAWG (SDG5.2) has interlinkages with the SDGs under review at HLPF2022 (SDGs 4, 5, 14, 15, and 17), and the achievement of the entire 2030 Agenda. While gender-based violence is pervasive in all contexts, women and girls’ vulnerability is exacerbated in complex situations, such as conflict, organised crime, pandemics, and climate emergencies.

Furthermore, in these contexts, women and girls face heightened difficulties in accessing justice and protection. Spotlighting justice for survivors of VAWG is timely, as the COVID-19 pandemic once again showed they tend to be overlooked in emergencies.

The panel of high-level representatives and technical experts – from the United Nations (Special Rapporteur on VAW), governments, academia, philanthropic organizations, and civil society – will provide local, national, regional and global perspectives on securing justice for survivors. Drawing on new research from Afghanistan, Honduras, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, South Sudan and Tunisia, and lessons learned from practical implementation, the panel will discuss and offer recommendations on legal and justice solutions for addressing VAWG in complex situations, including the repeal of discriminatory laws, women’s access to justice, support services and prevention.

Interpretation will be provided in English, French and Spanish
