Commission on Narcotic Drugs and Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice, The Permanent Mission of Austria to the United Nations (New York) and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime
Description:
The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated the world drug problem, created new opportunities for crime and has hampered the efforts of the international community in drug- and crime-related matters. An integrated, multidisciplinary, scientific evidence-based and comprehensive approach remains critical to ensure that no one is left behind, to advance the 2030 Agenda on Sustainable Development and to build back better from the COVID-19 pandemic. Being Vienna-based functional Commissions of the Economic and Social Council and the governing bodies of the UNODC, the Commission on Narcotic Drugs (CND) and the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice (CCPCJ) are the main policymaking bodies within the United Nations system to address drugs and crime, respectively, and guide international action in that regard.
The side event aims to answer several questions:
- What do we know about the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on drugs and crime trends?
- What do these data tell us about the role of the international community and why it should invest in addressing the world drug problem, the rule of law and crime prevention and criminal justice, for furthering the implementation of the 2030 Agenda?
- What are the Vienna-Based Commissions doing to advance the work on these topics?
These questions will be addressed by:
- H.E. Ambassador Mr. Takeshi HIKIHARA, Permanent Representative of Japan to the United Nations (Vienna) and Chair of the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice
- H.E. Ambassador Ghislain D'HOOP, Permanent Representative of Belgium to the United Nations (Vienna) and Chair of the Commission on Narcotic Drugs
- Gabriella VUKOVICH, President of the Hungarian Central Statistical Office and Chair of the United Nations Statistical Commission
- Angela ME, Chief of the Research and Analysis Branch (UNODC)
- Jo DEDEYNE-AMANN, Chief of the Secretariat to the Governing Bodies (UNODC)
The side event will be moderated by Delphine SCHANTZ, Representative, New York Liaison Office (UNODC)
