This side event will examine how SDG 17, multi stakeholder partnerships and digital technologies can be leveraged to promote democracy & civic participation internationally. The "Tech for Democracy" initiative will be presented as a valuable case study and example of an ambitious international multi-stakeholder initiative involving government, civil society, academia and the technology sector aimed at promoting democracy and broadening civic participation at multiple levels through the use of digital technologies. This side event will also present the #UNMute Civil Society campaign which works to improve meaningful civil society participation and engagement with the UN system, including enhanced digital participation ( https://action4sd.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/Recommendations-for-meaningful-civil-society-participation-at-the-UN_Feb2021.pdf) The various stakeholders involved in these initiatives will share their unique perspectives on the benefits and challenges of multi-stakeholder collaboration and identify the further actions needed to ensure that the potential of digital technologies is fully leveraged to strengthen democracy and civic participation internationally.
