Permanent Missions of Austria, Jordan and Italy to the United Nations
SDG 16 (peace, justice, and strong institutions) highlights the need for peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, for access to justice for all and for building effective, accountable, and inclusive institutions and fight corruption at all levels. The achievement of all SDGs depends on SDG 16. In the light of multiple, diverse crises and in view of fading trust in multilateralism and pressures on democracy, participation of women in peace and justice is ever more essential. Gender equality and the full and effective participation of women at all levels and stages of decision-making is central to ensure resilient, peaceful, and inclusive societies.
Inspired by the statement of Sima Sami Bahous, UN Women Executive Director, that ‘crises multiply threats, women are solution multipliers’, this side event, conducted in partnership with UN Women, seeks to explore in a multifaceted discussion how the rule of law, stable institutions, equal participation, stopping violence against women and fighting corruption contribute as essential components to our work on SDG 16 and SDG 5. What efforts are most needed and effective to advance these goals given the current situation?
The event will feature addresses by H.E. Ms. Karoline Edtstadler, Minister for EU and Constitution, Austria, H.E. Mr. Fabio Cassese, Director-General for Development Cooperation - Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Italy and H.E. Ms. Sima Sami Bahous, UN Women Executive Director.
