Making sustainability education part of the DNA of universities – Can we prove it?

To build a sustainable world, it is imperative to improve the knowledge, skills, and mindset on sustainability. Rather than being a good to have, sustainability education must be part of an institution’s DNA. That requires making sustainability part of how we measure success of one institution.

It is undeniable the number of changes the education sector undertook due to COVID. While we still need to adapt to new forms of teaching, the questions of ‘how can institutions prepare their students to respond to the Sustainable Development Goals?’ and ‘what tangible indicators can the sector use as success metrics?’ remain.

Sulitest is an initiative that supports follow up and review of SDG implementation, by offering tools that improve sustainability understanding and gathering the world’s only database on the awareness of the global goals. In 2022, Sulitest is launching the first international certificate of knowledge on sustainability, a system change lever that aim to accelerate progress towards SDG 4.7 in collaboration with an industry-wide movement.

The session will start with a descriptive webinar, discussing Sulitest’s latest report on the global trends of Sustainability Awareness globally and presenting the future certificate. It will include a presentation of case studies of how institutions, universities and accrediting bodies, are including sustainability education in their DNA and measuring its success. It will end with an invitation for an interactive discussion and Q&A to the presenters.

Round table #1 – Assessment as the system change lever

Rankings, ratings, and assessment (RRA) organizations have significant influence - and thus significant responsibility - to guide the academic sector. As we approach the threshold of irreversible climate change, many of these have recognized the need to change their criteria for assessment of the performance of higher education institutions to include contributions to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Numerous initiatives aimed either at improving current standards or creating new ones have emerged.

Round table #2 – Moving from brilliant actions to deep DNA transformation

There have always been fabulous people in higher education, professors, administrative staff, students, who are committed to integrating more sustainable development in courses, in campus management, in research...  A lot of quality projects have therefore been created. Unfortunately, few of them have really impacted the system as a whole.

In the last few years, things seem to be moving and many institutions seem to have integrated sustainable development in a more systematic way.

What has really changed? Where did these institutions start – with research, pedagogy or campus projects? Who initiated the movement? Was it a decision of the general management or the result of pressure from students? What are the concrete objectives and monitoring indicators?
