Making Women's Land Rights a Reality in the 2030 Agenda

Oxfam International

Over the years, countries have shown some encouraging progress towards realising women’s land rights. Yet the picture is far from achieving equal land rights for women to own, access, control or having stewardship of land. Even in countries where legal barriers were removed for women’s equal rights to land, the non-implementation of laws and the practice of customary laws and rules hinders the intended objectives.     How serious state parties are, in making the land targets and indicators of the SDGs a reality and achieving gender equality? The research conducted by the SDG Land Momentum Group in 2020 into the VNRs, revealed only handful of states reported on the land targets. The same research was  conducted looking into the 2021 VNRs. This side event will launch the findings of this research bringing attention to the following:   -    How State parties are reporting on the land targets, one of the central SDG targets to achieving many SDG goals?   -    How the present reporting by the States contribute or non-contribute to achieve gender equality as envisaged in the Goal 5   -    What all relevant stakeholders could do in a scenario of half way into the implementation of the SDGs to achieve the intended objectives in 2015?     The first part of the event will present the results of the 2021 VNR research and its implication on SDG Goal 5. The second part of the event will brainstorm with the participants on how to expedite the implementation of the SDGs in the remaining seven years.
