Permanent Missions of France and Mexico to the United Nations
HLPF coincides with the one-year anniversary of the Generation Equality Forum (GEF). After its inauguration in March 2021 in Mexico City, multi-stakeholder commitments valued at over $40 Billion towards the Global Acceleration Plan were made in Paris in July 2021. The one-year milestone is a critical moment for engagement, reflection and acceleration of progress.
The COVID-19 pandemic has deepened pre-existing gender inequalities and exposed gender-based vulnerabilities in social, political and economic systems that are also already impacted by climate change. It has also brought a massive acceleration towards digitalization of work, school and social life. The pandemic, recent climate and humanitarian disasters, the growing movement away from women’s sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) have all highlighted the urgent need to focus on accelerating gender equality.
Generation Equality is currently the world´s leading initiative to unlock political will, energy and large-scale collaboration for gender equality, to ensure progress on the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action and in support of building back equal towards a more inclusive, just and sustainable world. The initiative is demonstrating the importance of accelerated progress on gender equality through SDG17 (partnerships).
Generation Equality brings together multiple stakeholders who have made 2000+ commitments through six thematic Action Coalitions and the global Compact on Women, Peace and Security and Humanitarian Action (WPS-HA).
This high-level strategic roundtable will be spotlighting progress and lessons drawn from Generation Equality – as well as discussing solutions, including the unique multi-stakeholder partnerships model of Generation Equality towards achieving the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals. It also aims to re-affirm the commitments made towards GEF and will allow for stakeholders to pledge further support and investments to the GEF Journey.
