Permaculture: A Universal, Hopeful Practice for Building Back Better

Women's Federation for World Peace International

COVID-19 had exposed the fragility of our well-being and our food systems. As a way of ensuring a sustainable, inclusive and resilient recovery from the pandemic, WFWPI will host a virtual Side Event during the UN High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) 2022, highlighting permaculture as a practice to build back better, ensuring well-being, food security, promoting ecosystem restoration and building partnerships for the SDGs, between the local government and civil society.

The program will feature perspectives from expert permaculture practitioners, community leaders, educators and government leaders as well as a roundtable discussion. The event will be addressing Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 15-Life on Land, SDG 17-Partnerships for the Goals, among many of the inextricably linked goals, by inspiring and awakening a sense of shared responsibility among stakeholders for the health and well-being of the people and the planet. We will identify practical solutions and successful practices while encouraging the creation and implementation of policies that support resilience and partnerships towards building back stronger from the pandemic.

We hope to inspire both government and civil society, local and global, to contribute to the Decade of Action and Delivery with concrete actions that accelerate the achievement of the 2030 Agenda. This includes growing one’s own food, creating a community food forest, in collaboration with businesses and the local government, and showcasing permaculture as a universal, hopeful, regenerative model to achieve food security and the health and well-being of people and the planet.
