The SDG Land Degradation and Restoration Commitments: Progress and Challenges

Rural Development Institute

Many countries have made progress on their SDG land degradation and restoration commitments. Some have undertaken thoughtful planning or allocated new resources; others have strengthened sustainable land management practices in an inclusive way. However, many countries have yet to prioritize land degradation neutrality in their national development agendas and most have not undertaken significant action. Even those who acted decisively have many years before their new laws and programs are fully implemented or reach scale.

What progress has been made towards the SDG land degradation and restoration commitments? The research conducted by the SDG Land Momentum Group in 2020 into the VNRs, revealed few Parties reported on the relevant targets. The same research was conducted looking into the 2021 VNRs.

This side event will launch the findings of this research, bringing attention to the following:

  • How Parties are reporting on the land degradation and restoration targets, some of the central SDG targets to achieving many SDG goals
  • How the present reporting by Parties contribute or non-contribute to achieve land degradation neutrality and climate resilience as envisaged in the Goal 13 and 15   -    What relevant stakeholders can do in a scenario of half way into the implementation of the SDGs to achieve the intended objectives of 2015

The event will 1) present the results of the 2021 VNR research and its implication on SDG Goals 13 and 15 and 2) brainstorm with the participants on how to expedite the implementation of the SDGs in the remaining seven years.
