Permanent Mission of Costa Rica to the United Nations
The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at its heart are the result of a renewed global consensus on sustainable development. They build upon the multidimensional nature of development needs and the principle of shared but differentiated responsibilities of countries in the environmental, economic, and social spheres. This ambitious development agenda, which cannot be carried out in isolation or by increasing financial aid alone, establishes commitments for the entire international community and requires public policy actions and renewed partnerships at the national, regional, and international levels. In the aftermath of the current crises, especially in the fields of trade and global value chains, technology transfer, sustainable and just transition, the proposed side event will be a milestone in the effort to establish renewed cooperation between Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) and the European Union (EU). The two regions together represent 25% of the world GDP and a third of the United Nations Member States, and together can strengthen a common multilateral and cooperation agenda on global issues such as climate change, the digital revolution, financial stability and inclusion in the framework of the 2030 Agenda and the Paris Agreement. Political leaders and high-level leaders from various LAC and EU countries will determine together joint strategic priorities and lines of action for a sustainable and inclusive recovery, beyond the recovery phase, and to strengthen the longstanding partnership between both regions in pursuit of the 2030 Agenda, with specific focus on SDGs 5, 15 and 17.
