Towards Meaningful Inclusion of Children in SDG Accountability Processes: From Policy to Practice

Save the Children International

Child participation is both critical for the successful implementation of the 2030 Agenda and for achieving sustainable development for all. It is also a child’s right to have their views heard and given due weight, engage in civic action and participate in public decision-making and accountability processes in accordance with the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. With the 2030 Agenda, Member States explicitly recognised children as ‘agents of change’ thereby emphasizing the importance of their participation in Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) implementation and accountability. Member States also committed to tackling inequality within and between countries and to “reach the furthest behind first.” Subsequently, delivery of the commitments of the 2030 Agenda, necessitates real and safe opportunities for children, particularly those most affected by inequality and discrimination, to participate in the implementation, monitoring and accountability of SDG processes, thereby enabling them to exercise their civil rights and freedoms, including the right to be heard.

During the webinar, participants will hear from Member State Champions, civil society, and children themselves, why it is necessary to include children in the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, as well as the opportunities presented for children’s participation and engagement by the SDG Follow-up and Review process. Save the Children will also present two new tools offering practical guidance on how organizations and Member States can support children's meaningful participation in SDG processes and how the VNR process can be used to advance children's rights.
