World Organization of the Scout Movement (WOSM)
The pandemic has disrupted access to education and employment opportunities, severely impacting the futures and livelihoods of young people worldwide. Through direct investment in non-formal education and learning programmes, young people are being provided with new and innovative and significant opportunities for learning. Additionally, through youth-led projects young people and the most vulnerable in society are provided with new self-sustaining employment opportunities, which in turn must be supported by policymakers and stakeholders to support their investment and innovation to address the widening inequalities caused by the pandemic.
This session will explore how investing in non-formal education and learning is a crucial element in transforming education systems and preparing young people with practice skills, capacities, and experiences for the future, and for the present.
This session will approach the topic through the lens of youth organisations part of the Big Six youth organisations, who, in partnership have worked to revitalise and reimagine approaches to learning and empowering young people during the pandemic.
Formed in 1996, the Big 6 Youth Organizations are an alliance of well-established leading international youth-serving organizations. The Big 6 comprises the five largest youth movements in the world, and leading programmes for youth development. Together, the Big 6 actively involve and engage more than 250 million young people, contributing to the empowerment of more than one billion young people during the last century.
