VAAGDHARA

The tribal communities are a source of inspiration and were known for its sovereignty for ages. But due to increased modernization by the outside world, the communities went on forgetting its traditional practices, which were considered significant for sustainable development. It has been learnt from our experiences, the traditional lifestyle of the tribal farmers which was based on the circular economy, reduces dependency on the markets, enhances the income levels of the farmers and thus, was significant in achieving sustainable development of the community. For a resilient recovery from Covid-19 and sustainable livelihood, it is imperative to mobilise, enable and empower the communities to take ownership, making them self-reliant and resilient towards such unforeseen difficult situations.

This side event will highlight the need of scaling-up and augmenting such indigenous practices and solutions up to a large number of the communities, which could help them to build back better and contribute in achieving various sustainable development goals like 1 on no poverty, 2 on zero hunger, 5 on gender equity and 15 on life on land directly. The discussion will emphasize on how linking tribal communities with the sustainable agricultural practices and encouraging them to adopt components of integrated farming system through various on-farm and off – farm interventions, could be an effective way for resilient recovery. The side event will also present recommendations to focus small and marginal farmers, especially tribal farmers, in the agriculture policies, benefitting them to the maximum without the influence of external environment.
