UN Guiding Principles: cross-sector partnerships for sustainability and resilience

The Danish 92 Group

Building back better after the coronavirus requires new thinking – but it is also crucial that already existing instruments are implemented with new urgency - and with the highest level of ambition.

The Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGP) is one of these instruments. It has great potential for sustainability and resilience in value chains (SDG 12), including rights and work conditions (e.g SDG 5 and SDG 8) as well as environmental issues (SDG 14, SDG 15 and SDG 13). The full implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development can only be advanced by engaging actors in cross sector partnerships (SDG 17).

However, although the UNGP has existed for more than a decade, the implementation still presents major challenges. Addressing these challenges as well as the importance of cross sector partnerships is the main objective of this side-event.

The event is organized by the Danish 92 Group – Forum for Sustainable Development, as a multistakeholder roundtable with 4-5 keynote speakers including representatives from business and civil society.

The keynotes and discussion will focus on:

  • Content, scope and status of the UNGP
  • Showcasing partnership examples of UNGP implementation
  • Identifying challenges and proposing solutions
  • A binding UN treaty (IGWG)

The side-events’ contribution to the HLPF 2022 is to bring forward the UNGP as a crucial instrument for building sustainable, resilient and stable value chains, with cross-sector partnerships and related learning and potentials.
