Water at the center of climate adaptation: Forging inclusive partnerships in the run-up to the UN 2023 Water Conference

Permanent Mission of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to the United Nations

In the IPCC’s Sixth Assessment Report (2021), the urgency of action to address the interconnected global challenges of climate change, biodiversity loss and the water crisis became more clear. Climate-resilient water management is key in order to decrease climate-related risks and strengthen resilience to climate change, particularly climate extreme events. Water scarcity disproportionally affects the most vulnerable, especially women and girls.

Adaptation pays off. The COVID-19 pandemic has once again reminded us that the ongoing water and sanitation crisis, multiply risks across all aspects of our lives. So, it’s time to back up climate promises with action! It’s time to value water! This can only happen at the required scale and speed if the public and private sector come together and join efforts. Cross-sectoral partnerships can be the catalyst for the change we need.

As presented during our VNR, the Kingdom of the Netherlands faces many water and climate related challenges. Adapting to changing circumstances is in our DNA. The UN 2023 Water Conference, co-hosted by the Netherlands and Tajikistan, aims for concrete results through concrete actions by encouraging stakeholders from all sectors to announce voluntarily commitments as part of the “Water Action Agenda”.

Through showcasing best practices in the context of climate adaptation and water management, this side-event aims to mobilize public and private actors to forge inclusive partnerships and come forward with concrete commitments to deliver on the SDGs and improve climate-resilient integrated water management worldwide in the run up to the UN 2023 Water Conference.
