The global pandemic had a catastrophic effect on people’s lives and erased decades of gains in sustainable development. The decisions and actions taken during the upcoming months and years will determine whether pandemic recovery plans will put our societies on a course to reach the globally agreed-upon Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030. In the face of this challenge, new approaches of citizen participation and deliberation will play a vital role. This side event will highlight how different initiatives help to accelerate youth engagement in decision-making with regard to SDGs 4.7 and 16.7.
On behalf of the Czech Republic, which will hold the Presidency in the Council of the EU, we would like to present on the HLPF the unique deliberative project of the Conference on the Future of Europe (CoFoE). The Conference was a timely opportunity for European citizens to debate future challenges and priorities of the EU with young people playing a central role. The EU- wide citizen assembly enabled dialogue between citizens, politicians, decision-makers and stakeholder. Four thematic Citizens’ Panels gathered 800 randomly-selected Europeans reflecting the diversity of geographic origin, gender, age, socioeconomic background and level of education. A third of each Panel was composed of young people aged 16 to 25 years.
This side-event would like to explore different ways of youth engagement around the world with CoFoE as one, but not only, example.
