Gains made in HIV response (creation of community-led approaches to health, removal of discriminatory laws) are having a direct positive impact on vulnerable communities during COVID-19. Meanwhile, structural barriers that have persisted in HIV are now leaving the same vulnerable communities behind in COVID-19. The panel will explore the experiences of PLHIV and key populations under COVID-19 and how to realise lessons learned to promote transformative responses that leave no one behind, protect public health, create resilient communities, in COVID-19 and beyond. The event convenes representatives from governments, UN, key populations and other stakeholders to share challenges and good practices. Leaving no one behind is not only critical to ensure that the COVID response is effective, but also to make sure that it is in line with the SDGs (especially SDGs 3, 5, 1, 10, 16). Empowered and engaged communities can play a transformative role in responding to epidemics, in building back better by promoting social inclusion and resilience and accelerating achievement of the SDGs.
