SDG 7 aims to deliver universal access to clean cooking by 2030 (Target 7.1), as part of a just and inclusive pathway for sustainable development, achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. Yet the world is not on track in providing clean cooking fuels, technologies, and services to the 2.6 billion people lacking access as of 2019. This is particularly urgent as these people's health is severely threatened by the household air pollution caused by their continued cooking with traditional fuels and stoves. To get on track implies an unprecedented acceleration and a strong concerted efforts by all stakeholders. In the context of the 2021 High Level Dialogue on Energy to be convened by UN Secretary-General under the auspices of the UN General Assembly, this side event will highlight the challenges and opportunities to achieve universal access to clean cooking, and call for strengthened collective action by member states, multilateral institutions, private sector, finance and civil society to make clean cooking a priority.
