Youth development is a cross-cutting issue in the 2030 Agenda and addressing youth needs & rights are keys to ensuring the SDGs can be achieved. A youth development monitoring framework in the context of the SDGs to effectively track indicators across targets is crucially needed; while investments in building capacities and resources to ensure youth can be equal partners in achieving SDGs are as equally important.
The working paper ‘Believe in Better’ published by OSGEY and partners emphasized the importance of youth’s inclusion in national follow-up, review, and accountability processes of the 2030 Agenda. Moreover, the same call for meaningful youth engagement and participation for the 2030 Agenda was also highlighted in the UN's first-ever youth strategy, Youth2030.
To engage young people meaningfully in the SDGs accountability process, we need to provide better access to information for youth on the SDGs and state-led reviews and facilitate youth data collection processes. Most importantly we need to enable youth to do monitoring across SDG targets, especially in post COVID19 situation where many SDGs efforts have gone through significant challenges.
To promote youth-led data-driven advocacy for SDGs accountability, OSGEY aims to host a public-facing event on the sideline of HLPF 2021. The virtual side event aims to facilitate an educative demonstration to introduce the Youth SDG Dashboard to the public and to facilitate dialogue on the importance of data in the youth-led accountability process for SDGs.
The event will focus on data utilization for SDG 1,3,4,5,8,10,11,12,13,16; which are particularly relevant to young people.
