"Scientific research can make a critical contribution to addressing global challenges and achieving the SDGs. However, translating knowledge into action remains a complicated task. Research often fails to find its way into policy-making circles due to a number of technical, normative, cultural, political, institutional and financial barriers. With this in mind, a consortium of Geneva-based institutions has established a new channel through which research and knowledge from International Geneva and its global networks can amplify its impact on national and global policy making. Last fall, UNRISD launched evidence boxes to collect contributions on three entry points identified by the GSDR, which encompass all SDGs being reviewed at this year’s HLPF: human well-being and capabilities, sustainable and just economies, and food systems and nutrition patterns. This event will present some key findings from these reports, with a particular emphasis on implications for Covid-19 recovery.
The event will unfold as follows:
- Welcome words from the Swiss Permanent Representative in New York and a Representative of the PGAs office
- An introduction to the project by UNRISD Director Paul Ladd and an overview of the research findings by UNRISD Research Analyst Maggie Carter
- A presentation of the report on Human Well-Being and Capabilities, which summarizes research from International Geneva and its global partners, by report author Sophie Plagerson
- A presentation on Strengthening Science-Policy Collaborations for Sustainable Development by Nicolas Seidler of the Geneva Science-Policy Interface
- Responses to the presentations from two discussants
- A closing address by Nikhil Seth, Head of UNITAR, on the role of training in improving science-policy uptake
