SDG12: Sustainable management of waste and toxic chemicals is a key goal of the 2030Agenda. The social and gender dimensions of the waste and chemicals pollution crisis are often overlooked when designing policies. This event will present best practices and lessons learned from scoping studies in 4 countries, Bolivia, Indonesia, Kyrgyzstan and Nigeria, that have been carried out by partners from civil society and the United Nations conventions secretariat responsible for international agreements on waste and harmful chemicals. The global launch of the 4-country case-study presentation will take place during HLPF 2021, at this event. The report presents new insights into the social and gender dimensions of waste and chemicals challenges, focussing on the role of women and men as waste pickers, traders of obsolete and illegal chemicals and users of toxic chemicals for artisanal production of gold and other products. The report presents good practices on shifting from these unsustainable livelihoods to alternative sources of income, and what policy measures are needed to support a just transition. The event will have speakers from the 4 countries, and an interactive dialogue with policy makers from Member States, International Agencies and Civil Society. Translation will be provided. Concrete recommendations for HLPF on SDG12 review will be shared
