Spotlight on Adaptation, Resilience and Small-Scale Farmers

The world’s agriculture is facing multiple challenges, including an increasing demand for food to feed a growing population, diminishing yields, and degradation of natural resources and biodiversity as a result of human activity. In addition, the impacts of climate change are posing new threats to the world’s farmers and our food systems. A warming climate could cut crop yields by more than 25%, while extreme weather events resulting from climate change can have devastating effects on farmers, their land, and their harvests.

To be held on the margins of the 2021 High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF), the Government of Canada in partnership with IFAD will host a side-event that aims to showcase how small-scale producers remain underserved by global climate finance. They bear the devastating consequences of a changing climate, degrading soils, rising food insecurity and irregular migration. Food insecurity and poverty tend to be concentrated in the areas most vulnerable to climate change, such as sub-Saharan Africa, and particularly in the rural areas of low-income countries, where as much as 75 percent of the world’s extremely poor people live. Supporting the adaptation of small-scale agricultural systems to become resilient to the impacts of climate change is essential to achieving multiple SDGs relating to the multiple social and environmental crises that converge on poor rural farmers that are at the heart of the entire 2030 Agenda. Climate adaptation has the potential to reap the rewards of multiple win-win scenarios by contributing to climate mitigation, biodiversity restoration, environmental resilience, improved nutrition, and food security, and equitable livelihoods for rural farmers and marginalized groups. IFAD promotes agricultural growth that is environmentally sustainable and integrated into ecosystems.
