H. E. Ambassador Albert R. Chimbindi was elected Vice President of ECOSOC during the 78th Session in July 2022. He is the Permanent Representative of the Republic of Zimbabwe to the UN in New York, a position he has held since August 2021. His diplomatic career spans over 36 years. Before his appointment to New York, Ambassador Chimbindi was Director External in the President’s Department from 2020 to 2021. He was the Zimbabwean Ambassador to Ethiopia and Permanent Representative to the African Union (AU) and to the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) from 2014 to 2020. Before his appointment to Ethiopia, he was Director Multilateral Affairs in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, from 2013 to 2014. He was a Deputy Director in the Ministry from 2004 to 2011. His long diplomatic career has seen him hold the position of Acting Ambassador to the BENELUX countries in Brussels from 2009 to 2010. He served as Minister Counsellor at the Zimbabwean Embassy in Brussels, Belgium from 2004 to 2009, Counsellor at the Embassy of Zimbabwe in France; Principal Administrative Officer in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 1998 to 2002 and First Secretary and Head of Chancery at the Zimbabwean Embassy in Senegal from 1992 to 1997.
