Artificial Reefs Program

The UAE is committed to enhancing fisheries through the cultivation of natural coral reefs as well as the installation of artificial reef units across the country. To date, 1350 artificial reef units have been deployed with plans to deploy 1300 additional units in the coming years.

Fishing Bans and Awareness Programs

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has taken proactive measures to protect its marine resources through policies, legislations and regulations as well as investments in research and development. In an effort to rebuild overexploited fish stocks, the UAE enacted fishing ban of local commercial species (Safi and Sheri) during its spawning season and carried out national awareness campaigns.

IHO Hydrography Capacity Building Programme for Coastal States

Lighthouses Initiative

PPP initiative to release 30,000 fish in protected areas

The UAE will release two types of local fish species: goldlined seabream (Qabit) and yellow fin seabream (Shaam) fish, of approximately 150 gm. in size, in protected marine areas across the UAE. The UAE aims to release 30,000 fish across the UAE in the coming months. The initiative is aimed at increasing local fish and contributing to the safeguarding and breeding of fish, thereby supporting the fisheries sector in the country.

Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Marine Research Centre

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) established Sheikh Khalifa Marine Research Center, which will house 14 specialized laboratories divided in 5 clusters, to be operated in partnership with interested regional and international partners. The UAE welcomes regional and international businesses, entrepreneurs and research institutions to partner to conduct cutting edge research at the research center, planned to be completed end of 2018.
