I am writing in reference to the letter from HE Mr Collen Vixen Kelapile, President of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), dated 16 November 2021, addressed to Mr Rafael Mariano Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), inviting the IAEA to provide an input to the 2022 High Level Political Forum (HLPF).

The IAEA is an autonomous international organization in working relationship with the United Nations based on our Relationship Agreement. In accordance with its Statue and guidance from its Policy Making Organs, the IAEA through its Technical Cooperation programme transfers technology and builds capacities in the peaceful use ofnuclear science and technology in areas such as health and nutrition, safety and security, food and agriculture, water resource management, environment protection, and energy planning. They act as development enablers and contribute positively to the efforts of Member States to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Confronted with the COVID-19 pandemic, the IAEA has been able to continue delivering its mandate. As immediate response in the fight against COVID-19, the Agency delivered rapid and effective assistance to 129 countries and territories around the world, paying specific attention to developing countries and Least Developed Countries (LDCs ), to ensure that no one was left behind: 44 countries in Africa, 28 in Asia and the Pacific, 32 in Latin America and the Caribbean, and 24 in Europe and Central Asia, of which 33 LDCs, were supported in the process of building and enhancing COVID-19 testing capacities through the provision of real-time Reverse Transcription Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR) equipment, diagnostic kits, guidance and education materials.
