Small Island Developing States: Strategies for SDG success

The Antigua and Barbuda Agenda for SIDS: A Renewed Declaration for Resilient Prosperity” (ABAS), charts the programme of action for SIDS for the next decade. It outlines concrete actions across 10 thematic areas that must now be implemented. To achieve this, the international community must make much-needed development finance at scale and establish effective partnerships that mobilize the necessary means of implementation to ensure tangible results. The UN system must also be prepared to support ABAS with the appropriate working modalities, tools, expertise and resources to better support national priorities while delivering in a coherent and coordinated manner.

This session will examine early efforts to support the effective implementation of ABAS, particularly its monitoring and evaluation, including data collection, in some of the areas under in-depth review (SDGs 3, 5, 8, 14, 17). It will also highlight key initiatives that require international community support, such as the Debt Sustainably Support Service for SIDS (DSSS), the SIDS Center of Excellence and the Multi-Dimensional Vulnerability Index (MVI).

Proposed guiding questions:

  • What measures are required to successfully implement the Antigua and Barbuda Agenda for SIDS (ABAS)?
  • What innovative approaches are SIDS using to overcome their unique challenges in achieving the SDG?
  • How can SIDS leverage regional and international partnerships to enhance their sustainable development efforts?
  • What are the effective mechanisms to finance SDG initiatives in SIDS, and how can these be scaled up to ensure sustainable progress?
